It was on 4 July 1999 as two men with metal detectors were out and about on the Mittelberg. They had already frequently searched for military artefacts and archaeological objects in this area. They were to make the discovery of their life on this day

The Sky Disc was buried 3,600 years ago together with two swords, two spiral bracelets, two axes and one chisel on the Mittelberg plateau.

Due to the uniqueness of the Sky Disc, it could not be dated by means of comparable finds. But a piece of birch wood from a hilt of the added swords rendered an unambiguous result.

The fact that the Sky Disc is unique up to now and was not recovered during an archaeological excavation raised doubts of its authenticity. In order to dispel the doubts, it was examined by 18 scientists in tests.

Due to the statements of the two treasure hunters, that the Sky Disc had come from Mittelberg near Nebra, the Saxony-Anhalt State Office for Heritage Management and Archaeology initiated extensive archaeological excavations on the mountain plateau.
