Throughout the history of research, the reproduction and publication of rock carvings have been mainly aimed at making this rich and geographically spread material available for various types of studies.
Bronze Age images
The most remarkable traces left behind by the people who lived in the Bronze Age are the rock carvings found all over Bohuslän, and particularly at the World Heritage Site in Tanum.
The World Heritage Site contains around 500 known carvings, and in the whole of Bohuslän there are several thousands. Together they contain tens of thousands of images.
Even today, the images on the rocks are surrounded by mystery and – if we are to believe the people who lived during the Bronze Age – strong magical powers. Together with archaeological finds, the rock carvings give us an insight into the life and belief systems of ancient times.
There are many different motifs and our ability to interpret them is limited, but whatever their meaning, the carvings radiate a beauty and power that fascinate, and this experience is a good gateway to the monumental art of the Bronze Age.
